Joseph
Campbell (1904-1987) was one of the foremost interpreters of myth
in our time. He was a prolific writer, dedicated editor, beloved teacher,
inspiring lecturer, and an avid scholar of spiritual and cultural development.
Among the many books Campbell wrote and edited, he is best known for
his germinal The Hero With a Thousand Faces, his four-volume
The Masks of God, and his Historical Atlas of World Mythology.
Campbell was interested in all of the world's cultures. From the vantage
point of his broad knowledge he was able to see in the world's myths
universal, underlying themes that had eluded other scholars.
